Jack watches her. He watches her a lot.

She rarely notices, but when she does, she smiles that wondrous smile of hers. The smile that he likes to pretend she saves for him and his heart begins to soar. Even though he chastens himself at this romantic notion.

This time, she doesn’t notice.

He watches her carefully snip and tweak the unruly mass, as she tries her damndest to get it even; her eyes intense and sharp with concentration. Her hands gently relaxed upon the blunted scissors.

He watches Sawyer watching her.

He sees Sawyer in his typical manner casting furtive glances down her shirt, and Jack feels his blood boil and his heart ache rather than soar. His hands painfully clenched in his lap, and his eyes betraying his bland face.

He sees them watching each other, her eyes smiling back at his, and he can’t watch any more.
